In 1977 Richard played the part of Bryan Archer in a BBC Radio 2 sitcom called Albert and Me. The plot revolves around a doting single father and his son with Richard's character juggling his work selling cosmetics with his childcare arrangements. Each episode starts with the character Bryan reading a nursery rhyme to his son Albert. The series also starred Pat Coombs and Diana King and ran for nine episodes:
1) Pilot Episode
Starting with a reading of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
2) Rate of Decline
Starting with a reading of Red Riding Hood, the episode is about Bryan needing to raise money quickly.
3) Looking for a Job
Starting with a reading of The Gingerbread Man, the episode finds Bryan trying to get a job and wondering if Albert will get in the way of this.
4) Spanner in the Works
Starting with a reading of This Little Piggie, this episodes sees Albert start at nursery.
5) Holiday
Starting with a reading of Billy Goat Gruff, Brian and Albert set off on their holiday to Frimlington. Packing enough stuff to sink a battle ship, they find their fellow holiday makers aren't so welcoming.
6) Mind That Baby
Starting with a reading of Snow White, Bryan becomes wrapped in red tape at the benefits office.
7) Where There's a Will
Starting with a reading of Dick Whittington, Bryan looks to the future when he goes into hospital.
8) The Homecoming
Starting with a reading of The Ugly Duckling Bryan gets distracted from his big snooker match when he hears that Albert's mum intends to visit.
9) Family Christmas
Starting with a reading of Cinderella, Bryan finds himself double-booked for Christmas.
In 1983 the show was re-instated with Robert Lindsay playing the role originally performed by Richard.
