In 1976 Richard began began a nineteen month stint of playing the part of a promiscuous North Country grocer called Trevor Tinsley in a West End hit called Funny Peculiar. His famous co-stars included Stella Moray, Matthew Kelly and his old friend from RADA David Bradley.
The first performance of Funny Perculiar took place at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool on the 30th January 1975. It was first performed in London at the Mermaid Theatre on the 22nd January 1976, before taking up residence at the Garrick Theatre on the 28th April 1976.
Richard's work on this production achieved nomainations for "Actor of the Year in a New Play", "Comedy Performance of the Year", "Play of the Year" and "Comedy of the Year" at the Laurence Olivier Awards in 1976.
